I want to paint my new gearbox black, satin or matt, any body got any tips on what to use?

I'd go for satin. Have a look at www.frost.co.uk some good bits on there.

I would use Hammerite aerosol, just make sure everything is clean and allow time as several coats will be required. With Hammerite you can't leave overnite and spray again the next day, it will craze so complete the job the same day, it's not cheap but what is, it's resistant to oil etc don't think you would be disappointed.

hamerite is fantastic if you get the one with the built in kurust , you can spary it onto rusty metal i did a whole engine it that stuff and i do recon mondeo rear subframes in it az well , just haz to b clean and no loose rust , i normaly spray brake cleaner on to get the oil off ,coz it avapourates quickly , but panel wipe will do the same

it survives 200f+ temperatures then? need special primer on aluminium aswell

Hammerite do a "High Heat" up to 600 degrees C but only in Matt Black and only in an aerosol but no primer needed.
